Closer Means Faster: On the Highway of M2M Data Transfer

Too many people using the same access channel to download a video or log on through a hotspot and it happens—the bytes flow at the pace of a wounded turtle, turning the broadband superhighway into a winding country road.

But a small, four-millimeter-square device could solve the problem.

Antenova, Ltd, UK-based manufacturer of antennas and RF antenna modules for M2M and the IoT, presented their Zoma TransferJet Coupler at last month’s Embedded World in Nuremberg. The small device enables the transfer of large files, such as photos and videos, between mobile devices (cameras, smartphones, video game consoles, etc.).

On the Data Transfer Highway

TransferJet is a close-proximity wireless transfer standard offering rates of 375 Megabits per second, enabling data exchange at a much higher speed than most Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections. The coupler operates in the 4.48 GHz band. However, the communicating devices must be placed very close together. Colin Newman, CEO of Antenova explains:

Four centimeters is the maximum distance. The closer, the faster. Today, if two devices, two mobile phones or a camera and a mobile phone, want to communicate with this near field communication, you still need to plug in a dongle via USB. But in the course of 2016, the first products that have our coupler embedded in the PCB will be launched.

Newman refuses to say exactly which products will soon be exchanging data directly at elevated rates. He merely hints that they will be industrial products, such as robotic arms.
