Simotion Moves Forward

Global technology leader Siemens has announced a software update for its high-end motion control system, dubbed Simotion.

In a major step forward, version 4.5 is equipped with object-oriented programming and open platform communications unified architecture (OPC UA).

This allows mechanical engineers to implement large software-based projects with much more efficiency, and to access Simotion data in a standardized way across all automation levels, up to the cloud. Authentication, authorization and encryption protect communications.

With the new release, complex applications can be broken down into manageable segments to precisely illustrate the structure of a modular machine. Engineers can therefore better standardize and reuse software modules, reducing programming and testing costs significantly, as well as susceptibility to errors.

The new OPC UA supplements Profinet communications in areas such as real-time applications, where both protocols are used on a single cable without any loss of performance.
