DSTI Supports Local High School in FIRST Robotics Competition

DSTI recently donated $2,500 towards Andover High School's Robotics Team to support their participation in a competition among thousands of students across the globe.

DSTI recently donated $2,500 towards Andover High School's Robotics Team to support their participation in a competition among thousands of students across the globe.

The resources were used to purchase electronics and other building materials for this year''s regional FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition held in Duluth, Minnesota late February.

Under strict rules, student teams are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.

"Not only was this a great opportunity to support our community and the growth of the Robotics Team, but it also provides an experience as close to "real world" engineering as a student can get," says DSTI Engineering Manager Phil Engelman. "Helping students develop the skills needed for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers makes sense, as we hope to eventually recruit top talent for positions at DSTI in the future," added Engelman.

"Our team has grown a tremendous amount in the last three years, from receiving the Rookie Inspiration Award in 2012 to now being recognized amongst the Midwest''s best teams," says Team Coach and Industrial Technology Teacher Frank Kratochvill.

“A huge thank you to companies like DSTI who graciously donated and to the mentors who spent countless hours guiding the team to another successful year,” Kratochvill added.
