Automated grinding increases surface quality on medical devices

Medical devices follow exeptionally strict requirements on safety and production quality. Top surface appearance on artificial limbs for example is a crucial factor. Here Ferrobotics, the international expert in contact-sensitive automation, has set the quality bar extremely high by an fully automated grinding solution. A German plastics manufacturer now took this technology lead for grinding visible parts of dialysis machines.

The challenge was typical: Complexe form of the workpiece, radii, edges, corners, drillings… Of course the edges must remain clear. The plastic plates‘ size itself is approximately 40x25 cms. Facing such preconditions, the demand for an evenly high surface quality is tricky but are home grounds for Ferrobotics.

It was at the Hannover Industrial Automation Trade Show where the Ferrobotics automation equipment „Active Contact Flange ACF“ first attrackted the attention. Meanwhile a fully robotized ACF solution removes any burrs on the relatively small injection-moulded part with rough surface structure. Manual work is past. Far better performance, constant high quality output and up to 30 percent reduced cycle times are the long-term benefits.

The German plastics manufacturer did not choose the easy card. There was a big choice of possible workpieces but it was the most demanding one of all to be solved first. Anyway, innovation pays off and the next project , motor cycle parts, is already on the table.
