The Lightweight Forging Initiative, englobing primarily German companies, aims to slim down vehicles through deconstruction
Engineers took a van apart, analyzed all the parts and formulated ideas for lightweight design. Concentrating on the powertrain and chassis, representing 36% of total vehicle weight, resulted in enough design and materials changes to save 99 kilos. The next step is to spread the word throughout the automotive industry. To this end, 64 companies, 4 research associations, 10 research institutes and 2 universities have joined forces in the Lightweight Forging Research Network. Reducing weight is one of the easiest ways to comply with ever more stringent CO2 emissions regulations.
