The Prirazlomnaya is the first ice-resistant oil platform built to withstand the rigors of offshore arctic drilling
Immune to corrosion and humidity, it can operate autonomously for 90 days in case bad weather prevents resupply. A deflector protects against 10-meter waves and support the pressure of 33 tons of ice. The subsea berm prevents undermining and the platform’s 500,000+ tons keep it firmly anchored to the ocean bottom. All wellheads are within the platform to prevent contact with the water. Storage tanks are filled with water when no oil is present, increasing platform stability and preventing oxygen buildup, an explosion risk factor.
