Smart mining aims to improve efficiency and safety
Advanced communications systems must cope with harsh site conditions, but WiFI connections reduce the time workers must spend on the road between central office and mine. The hours saved mean less employee fatigue and lower vehicle operating expenses. The same wireless installations make it possible to warn miners away from heavy machinery at work or areas of poor air quality. They also can determine miners’ positions underground and enable them to call for help. A network of smart rock bolts measures strain and vibration for added security, and remotely-controlled machinery improves personnel safety.
