Lubrication is the Lifeblood of the Airplane
Aviation presents particular lubrication challenges
When lives are at stake, fail-safe operation is a must, even under extreme conditions. For example, aircraft wheel bearing grease must support high temperatures during landing even after hours of sub-freezing conditions at altitude. The industry demands thinner lubricants which circulate more easily around engine parts and require less power to move, while containing additives to prevent deterioration and combustion. Solid film (dry) lubricants can be used where liquids might contaminate certain parts. Another requirement is robust cutting fluids for aircraft manufacture. But traditional chlorine additives can cause corrosion, requiring the use of specialized products to do the job.
