Access to artificial intelligence is now as close as the cloud

Programmers and developers can take advantage of powerful, cloud-based cognitive systems—such as IBM Watson—once only available on supercomputers. Application programming interfaces can be used to create systems that learn and think for themselves. This promises enormous improvements in maintenance scheduling, quality control and factory automation. In a demonstration at this year’s Mobile World Congress, two cloud-linked robots used continuously uploaded photos to balance a ball on the platform they held between them. Connection speed, the current hurdle, should be overcome with the introduction of 5G mobile by 2020.
