KUKA LBR IIWA: A NEW ERA OF SENSITIVE ROBOTICS BEGINS

Kuka's New Robot Marks Another Step Towards Service Robotics

German-based Kuka put on an impressive display with its new LBR iiwa series at this year’s BI-MU in Milan, which ran from September 30th to October 4th 2014. LBR stands for ‘Leichtbauroboter,’ german for lightweight robot and iiwa translates as ‘intelligent work assistant.’ Kuka believes the new robot is “an important milestone on the road to service robotics.” The LBR iiwa is the first robot to have torque sensors in every axis and the world’s first series produced lightweight production assistant designed for use in industrial applications.

The series consists of two models, the LBR iiwa 7 R800 and the LBR iiwa 14 R820, the former has a rate payload of 7 kg and the latter 14 kg. The robot doesn’t require a protective cage and human co-workers can direct the robot to change direction or task by simply touching or pulling the arm. Its high tech sensors ensure the LBR iiwa does not harm people or force a component into the wrong position on an assembly line, meaning it can be used on the most delicate of tasks. The future of cobots in the workplace is well and truly here.
