The OptiSonic-series ultrasonic machining centers from OptiPro Systems are designed to help companies achieve high efficiency with glass and ceramics like sapphire and silicon carbide.

The company’s IntelliSonic software keeps the oscillation of the cutting tool at an optimal level to ensure high machining efficiency. The operator selects the type of tool that will be used for the job, and the software analyzes the tool to determine the ideal oscillating frequency. Once the ideal frequency is determined and the cycle starts, IntelliSonic automatically adjusts the frequency based on changing machining conditions in order to maintain the ideal tool oscillation.

OptiSonic’s ultrasonic machining technology is said to significantly reduce the amount of force on the workpiece during machining, allowing operators to increase processing speeds and cutting feed rates for shorter cycle times. Reduced force on the part also means less force on the tool, resulting in less tool wear and longer tool life.

The OptiSonic series has machines in four sizes, with X-axis travels ranging from 500 to 1,200 mm. The machines are built on heavy cast iron bases to provide vibration damping, and specialized spindles promote machine reliability. The three-axis configuration performs operations such as lightweighting, pocketing, core drilling, small-hole manufacturing, rastering and deep drilling. Four- and five-axis versions can generate complex geometries.
