Sense ID Can Read Your Fingerprints Even If Your Hands Are Dirty

This week Qualcomm revealed its new fingerprint scanner technology and if the promo campaign is to be believed, Sense ID is set to be one the most sophisticated fingerprint scanners out there. It is the first biometric platform based on ultrasound technology and will have the ability to pick up fingerprints through sweat, dirt, hand lotion and other common contaminants. Sense ID is an improvement on other capacitive fingerprint technologies as it has “three dimensions” of security. It uses ultrasonic sound waves to penetrate the outer layers of the skin to create a highly detailed 3D map of the fingerprint. The surface map picks up on distinguishing features such as ridge endings, ridge flow and sweat pores which are extremely difficult to imitate or copy, thereby providing an extra layer of security not possible with most current technologies.

Qualcomm’s 3D sensor can also authenticate fingerprints through glass, steel, plastic among other materials, which makes it very versatile and offers a device manufacturer the option to integrate the scanner into any part of their product’s design. So instead of inputting a four digit code you might place your finger on a phone or tablet’s display to access the device. The new 3D sensor technology will be compatible with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 & 425 processors. Those in-the-know in the industry will probably reserve judgement until they have tested out the technology for themselves, but let’s hope early excitement around Sense ID translates into something truly tangible.
