FAA FLOATS NEW COMMERCIAL DRONE PROPOSALS

Drone Delivery Services Take a Hit in FAA's Recent Plans

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US has released its proposed guidelines for regulating commercial drone use. The news comes in the wake of the FAA’s agreement with CNN, which will allow the network to legally experiment with UAVs in producing video content. CNN’s deal was just one of several waivers the FAA granted to select companies. The new guidelines reflect more a one-size fits all approach and include restrictions such as no flying over people unless they are part of the operating team, not flying at speeds greater than 100 mph (161 km/h) or at altitudes over 500 ft (152.4 m) and no dropping items. The last condition would appear to rule out delivery-by-drone services, like Amazon Prime Air, for the time being. However nothing is set in stone at this stage, these guidelines are designed to stimulate a public debate which will inform the FAA’s final recommendations. So, you could still one day see your parcel float down from the skies above!
