STANFORD STUDENTS USE SMARTPHONES TO FLY QUADCOPTERS

Mechanical engineering students at Stanford University have found a way to use open-source smartphone operating systems to control a mechatronic device, which is a device combining mechanics with electronics

The students opted to build a quadcopter for their ME 202 course project, in compliance with instructions to turn their smartphones into controllers for a device of their own creation. Consulting associate professor and lecturer Matt Ohline says that there are endless applications to the smartphone-enabled Mechatronics Systems, and that the students have undertaken the project with much enthusiasm. Though an intensive testing phase of the project is still underway, the students envision its prompt completion and launch into the consumer market.
