LOCAL MOTORS 3D PRINT FIRST-OF-A-KIND CAR AT IMTS CHICAGO

Two Seater Strati Built and Driven During Important Tech Show

Last week, the crowds and assembled media at the International Manufacturing Technology Show, in Chicago, US, witnessed a 3D printing first. Local Motors partnered with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to build a driveable 3D printed vehicle during the Sept. 8-13 event. “Local Motors said it believes it is the first company to ever attempt to 3D print both the body and chassis components of a vehicle together.” The electric powered Strati was rapidly assembled with the longest period of time, 44 hours, being devoted to printing the body and chassis in one piece. The construction team used a process called Broad Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) to achieve this printing marvel. This process involved using ABS plastic that has been infused with carbon fiber. The mechanical components such as wiring, motors, suspension and a battery were added after.
