SEE OVER 1,000 MINIROBOTS FORM INTO COMPLEX SHAPES

Swarming Robots Inspired by Ants Capacity to Work Together

Watch this fascinating video of the “world’s largest robotic swarm.” The swarm was created using 1,024 small robots called Kilobots, which are each equipped with an onboard microcontroller, infrared sensors and transmitters for communication and motors that permit them to move straight or turn left or right. The swarm was able to form 2D shapes like stars and also to spell out letters.

The system that allows them to work in this way was developed by Mike Rubenstein and his colleagues at Harvard University, US, and was inspired by the way ants work together in nature to form rafts in time of floods or to cross rivers and streams. UAV designers have been similarly inspired by nature to design drones that can accomplish complex tasks using simple coordinated movements.
