CHECK OUT THE NERD, THE SECURITY CONCIOUS E-READER

US Navy Develop E-Reader to Protect Naval Security

The US Navy has recently launched the Navy e-Reader Device (NeRD), a kindle-like e-reader for its sailors. And no, it doesn’t come in navy blue.

The Navy are bucking the trend with this one, as the new e-reader doesn’t compete with competitors on connectivity, nor does it push the bounds on functionability.

In fact, the e-reader’s limitations were purposefully designed for cybersecurity reasons.

Developed by the Navy in cooperation with Findaway World, NeRD is a compromise technology with few capabilities, no camera, USB or wireless connectivity.

This is important to limit the Navy’s exposure to future cybersecurity hacks, or scandals such as the recent Snowden affair.

Each submarine will be provided with 5 e-readers, which each have a catalogue of 300 titles.

Who knows future security concerns may see more of this type of product being developed!
