LIGHTWEIGHT CELLO, MADE POSSIBLE BY POLYURETHANE

Bayer applies plastics know-how to make musical instruments portable

Bayer MaterialScience has taken the traditional wooden cello and modernized it– with polyurethane. The fully-functional cello is made of Bayer plastics, making it lightweight and portable, as well as capable of incorporating a suite of optical effects.

The Cello 2.0 is made of crystal-clear cast resin that can be molded into almost any shape, which also allows interactive optical features. These effects would be helpful for students learning to tune their instruments by providing visual support, or help them to keep a beat. To accomplish these effects, lighting and design specialist explored LEDs and ultra flat OLEDS built directly into the cello.

Bayer MaterialScience offers an entire range of high-tech polymers for other musical instruments. Read more about their update to traditional wooden cello here.
