TINY SENSORS CAN TURN YOUR SIGNATURE INTO LIGHT SIGNALS

Georgia Tech’s alternative to existing pressure sensors

Researchers at Georgia Tech have developed a sensor that converts mechanical pressure into optical signals. Imagine penning out your signature or providing your fingerprints, but rather than an inked imprint, you’d be leaving behind LED signals that can be captured and processed optically. Built with thousands nanometer-scale wires, these ultra-sensitive sensors could also potentially be used in biological imaging and micro-electromechanical (MEMS) systems. The hope is that the device will eventually offer a new approach to human-machine interfaces.
