A SOLAR PANELS TO RING THE MOON

How the moon could provide for our energy

No one will argue with the fact that finding alternative energy sources is one of our century’s main stakes. With the recent catastrophy in Fukushima, it’s also not surprising that Japan has placed a lot of hope on solar energy. Maybe too much since the Shimizu Corporation, a Japanese construction firm, is seriously aiming to power the whole Earth with solar energy harvested on the Moon!

The idea is quite simple: it consists of building a giant ring of solar panels surrounding the Moon’s equator (11,000 km!) then transmitting the energy back to earth via microwave. The project is called LUNA RING and, if approved, would start in 2035. The difficulty lies in the construction and setting of such a project, but the firm says robots can build and install the panels using local material.

So for now, it is still science fiction. Insomuch it does even mention the geo-political issues such a project would raise!
