REMEMBER WHEN…ENDEAVOUR WAS DRIVEN THROUGH DOWNTOWN L.A.

The largest object to roll through L.A.

After 25 missions during 9 years of service (1992 to 2011), it was time for the NASA space shuttle Endeavour to retire. So where do space conquerors head to when they are done with intense activity? Since October 2012, Endeavour is displayed at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

The journey towards its new home will surely leave its mark on history: the shuttle is 37 meters long and 24 meters wide, making it the largest object to move through L.A. Imagine such a giant rolling through the city’s crowded Streets, for a 19 km trip! Just to help you visualize the scene, 400 trees were felled to clear the path, many street lights and traffic signals were withdrawn… Unsurprisingly, the budget to move Endeavour was over $10 million.

An exciting project for the lucky people present…for the others, let’s console ourselves with the amazing pictures taken! It almost feels as if we were there, in the front row! When engineering meets the general public in a sensational way…
