Komatsu WA480-8 Wheel Loader

The Komatsu WA480-8 wheel loader is a 299-horsepower Tier 4-F-certified machine designed to be a three-pass loader for on-highway trucks and hoppers, and is aimed at quarry, infrastructure, and nonresidential construction applications.

Its Komatsu SAA6D125E-7 engine uses up to 20 percent less fuel than its Tier 3 predecessor, and Komatsu designers tout that the company’s emissions technology reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) by more than 80 percent from the Tier 3 model.

The auto idle shutdown feature also can save fuel.

Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) and other aftertreatment components are designed in conjunction with the engine for efficiency and long life, and more than 95 percent of KDPF regeneration is performed passively, with no action required of the operator and no interference with machine operation.

The company also says a “generous curves” bucket design fills and retains material better, making the machine nearly 8 percent more productive than the previous model.

“SmartLoader Logic,” combined with the lockup torque converter that activates in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear, is designed to provide optimal engine torque for improved acceleration, hill-climbing ability, a higher top speed, and fuel savings.

The loader has an auto-dig system that controls bucket tilt and lifting by sensing pressure applied to the work equipment.

An integrated load meter system displays data directly to the machine’s main monitor and remotely via the Komtrax telematics system. Load subtotal and cancel functions are available via buttons integrated into the machine work levers. (The load meter is only available on two-lever, two-valve machine configurations.)

The latest version of the company’s Komtrax telematics system provides key machine metrics, including KDPF status and DEF-level data, fuel consumption, plus performance information collected and sorted by operator ID.

A 7-inch, full color, high-resolution monitor with Ecology Guidance is standard, as is a separate, full color, rearview monitor.

An optional advanced joystick steering system eliminates the steering wheel.
