STRATASYS HELPS VOLVO CUT TURNAROUND TIMES BY 94 %

Fortus 3D Printing System Reduces Turnaround From 36 Days to Two Days

3D printing is much talked about in the press, we regularly come across a whole range of non-industry news articles that often lurch from one extreme to the other: either 3D printing is the future of manufacturing or a specialist technology that is only useful for creating prototypes and demonstration models. But outside of all the hype we are seeing real-world applications of additive manufacturing technologies making the difference to businesses around the world. Stratasys recently reported that its Fortus 250mc 3D Production System has helped Volvo Trucks in France to achieve spectacular improvements to assembly line turnaround times.

Volvo have apparently been able to reduce turnaround times on specific metal production tools from 36 days to just two days, a whopping 94 percent. The recent move to 3D printing these tools from thermoplastic ABSplus has brought about significant savings too. In an article by 3dprintingindustry.com, “the cost benefit per centimeter cubed is the following: 1€/cm3, compared to 100€/cm3 if making the same object or tool from metal.” According to Pierre Jenny, the manufacturing director at Volvo Trucks, Stratasys 3D printing has had a massive impact on how Volvo now works. He said “The capability to produce a virtually unlimited range of functional tools in such a short timeframe is unprecedented and enables us to be more experimental and inventive to improve production workflow.” Further to this Volvo has said the ability to produce custom designed parts quickly and cost-efficiently is “unimaginable with traditional techniques.”
