JBJ PROVIDES BLOODHOUND SSC TEAM WITH CUSTOMIZED SOLUTION

jbj Pulls Out All the Stops to Solve Fuel Pump Test Rig Challenge

The Bloodhound SSC project has brought together some of the best in the business across a variety of industries, all in the aid of breaking the land speed record by matching or exceeding 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h) in a supersonic car. The project is at an advanced stage and the car is pretty much assembled. The Bloodhound SSC team has created effective working relationships with a diverse range of manufacturers and suppliers, such as its partnership with Parker Hannifin to design and build an airbrake system that will slow the car by the equivalent of 60 mph (100 km/h) per second. The team has also called on the services of specialist power transmission supplier jbj Techniques Ltd. to solve a problem that the Bloodhound engineering crew were having on the fuel pump test rig.

In a recent press release jbj outlined the issue and the solution, “The scope of supply was to produce a suitable drive coupling with a maximum diameter of 160 mm which is capable of transmitting 550 Nm @ 10,000 rpm, needed to be as short an assembly as possible and at the same time be able to accept misalignment within the drivetrain.” In reply, jbj proposed a Sier Bath coupling by Lovejoy Inc., which has a high torque capacity and fitted perfectly within the existing adaptor arrangement. Things moved quickly on from there, jbj’s proposed solution required a special drive shaft, “3D models were then supplied and approved by the Bloodhound team and after manufacture the complete assembly was dynamically balanced to ensure that the coupling operated without generating any additional forces.” When you are dealing with speeds of 1,000 mph precision engineering is an absolute necessity.
