Aug 9: The ground-breaking ceremony for Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link was held in Kuantan, the capital of Pahang. The MYR 55 billion (USD 11.7 billion) railway project contracted by China Communications Construction is the largest project conducted by Chinese companies overseas at present and also one of the most prominent ones under the Belt and Road initiative. Various SANY machines including excavators, rotary drilling rigs, cranes, concrete pump machinery were displayed at the ceremony, attracted huge attention.

The ECRL is 688 km long in totality making it the biggest project between Malaysia and China. It originates in Gombak District, close to Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur and ends in Kelantan, northeast of Malaysia. The rail link will adopt China’s railway standard, with passenger train running at 160 km/h and freight train 80 km/h. “This is an important project which will not only create 1.5% GDP growth, but also help Malaysia play a bigger role in Southeast Asia,” Hon. Mr. Najib Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia said at the event.

The ECRL that connects major cities along east coast with the more developed west coast will boost the trade, logistics, import & export, tourism and other industries in the local market. It’s said that Malaysia is planning to make the ECRL part of the Trans-Asian Railway and link it with the railways in Thailand, building a super-transport line from China’s Southwest to Malaysia.

However, this is not the first time that SANY equipment has contributed in the infrastructure construction and development in Malaysia. SANY had entered the Malaysian infrastructure development sector as early as 2007, and had generated USD 120 million until 2016.

Jan 11, 2017, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi led a delegation to visit SANY. The delegation discussed further cooperation of housing projects, new energy, ports, education, machinery manufacturing and financial service.

July 17: SANY Group signed a MOU with LBS Bina Group Berhad (LBGB). The event was witnessed by Dr. Wee Ka Siong, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department. According to the MOU, SANY and LBGB will set up a joint venture to push forward the prefab business in Malaysia.
