Ethernet-APL delivers energy insights and installation savings

Recently, ABB worked with UK channel partner JWF to support a global manufacturer of packaging film with an upgrade of their large and complex production site.

A global manufacturer of packaging film needed to monitor steam usage across multiple remote locations within a large and complex production site. The site's topography and the positioning of steam meters posed significant challenges for traditional installations, which would require extensive cabling and dedicated power supplies.

Additionally, the customer required real-time access to multiple measurement parameters such as flow, pressure, and temperature from vortex steam meters, with seamless transmission to a centralised PLC system.

ABB proposed the use of Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer), a cutting-edge standard that enables both power and data communication over a single shielded twisted-pair cable. This approach dramatically simplifies wiring and significantly reduces installation costs.

Ethernet-APL is designed for use in hazardous areas (Zone 1), where conventional industrial Ethernet solutions are not viable. It also allows for greater flexibility in device placement, enabling field instruments to be installed in locations without a local power source.

Crucially, Ethernet-APL supports the transmission of multiple process variables such as flow, pressure, and temperature using standard Ethernet protocols, ensuring seamless integration with the site’s existing PLC infrastructure.
