Additive Metal Manufacturing: Precision Begins with Perfect Powder Preparation
Additive manufacturing demands the highest powder quality — and amixon® provides the right solutions. Our powder mixers ensure optimal homogeneity, flowability, and purity for advanced metal AM processes.
Additive Metal Manufacturing: Precision Begins with Perfect Powder Preparation
Additive manufacturing with metal powders offers significant advantages when producing complex geometries such as freeform surfaces, internal channels, or lightweight yet high-strength structures. It is also economically attractive for small production runs, repair parts, or projects where only digital CAD data exists. Since no molds or matrices are required, the quality of the final component depends heavily on powder metallurgy and precise powder preparation.
Additive Manufacturing with Metal Powders – Superior Results Through High-Quality Powder Mixing
When Powder Bed Processes Are Most Efficient
The technology excels when highly complex shapes, organic structures, or hollow geometries are required. It is equally advantageous when no tooling is available or rapid turnaround is essential, enabling fast and cost-efficient production.
Powder Metallurgy as the Foundation
Metal powders are typically produced by atomization, condensation, or milling. Their characteristics — particle size distribution, purity, and homogeneity — directly determine the quality of the additively manufactured part. This makes the mixing process an essential step in the overall process chain.
amixon® Powder Mixers for Additive Manufacturing & Powder Metallurgy
Meeting the Highest Quality Requirements
amixon® mixing systems are designed to meet the strict standards of metal AM processes, especially:
• LPBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion)
• DED (Directed Energy Deposition)
Ideal Mixing Quality for Metal Powders
• Uniform blending regardless of particle shape, size, density, or flowability
• Three-dimensional rearrangement – independent of filling level or tool speed
• Reliable prevention of segregation during conveying and packaging
Optimized Powder and Flow Properties
amixon® mixers ensure exceptionally even distribution of alloy elements. Metal powders can also be coated or modified — including with nanoscale additives — to enhance flowability, packing density, and powder bed uniformity.
Special Processes in One System
• Degassing
• Evaporation
• Drying of low-volatility media
All performed in a vacuum-tight, heatable mixer, with optional inert gas treatment afterwards.
Ultra-Pure Alloys
• Ceramic liners available to prevent metallic contamination
• Hygienic, pharma-grade design ensures maximum process reliability
Testing Opportunities at the amixon® Test Center
At the amixon® Test Center in Paderborn, a variety of mixers, vacuum dryers, and reactors are available for realistic trials with your original materials. The equipment features product-contact components made of Alloy 59, operating temperatures up to 350 °C, and pressures up to 25 bar. Ceramic-coated surfaces are also available for high-purity applications. Together, we develop the ideal test setup and evaluate powder behavior and mixing performance under practical conditions.
