The National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety, an agency belonging to the Ministry of Employment in Spain, has recently published a Technical Note of Prevention for occupational hazards caused by lightning strikes, in which Aplicaciones Tecnológicas has collaborated as experts in lightning and surge protection technologies.

The formation of lightning is impossible to avoid and is a danger to people’s lives without adequate measures in place. That is why they must be taken into account within occupational prevention plans.

The Technical Notes of Prevention (NTP) are guidelines of good practices and, although their application is not obligatory, they constitute a reference for consultation in order to facilitate the technical application of the labour regulations.

The NTP 1.084 has been published in order to know the causes of lightning formation and to minimize its possible effects, describing the risk factors that may affect workers or work equipment and the most appropriate prevention and protection measures for their control. Therefore, it establishes lightning rods and surge protection devices as permanent prevention measures and storm detectors as temporary measures.
