From October 5 to 8, 2015, at the Motek in Stuttgart, Aventics will present a product from its safety portfolio: the LU6 locking unit. The unit enables safe braking and holding by preventing dangerous movements and accidental startups. Its integrated sensor also increases the availability of machines and systems.
Whether installed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, in the event of a pressure drop or failure, the LU6 locking unit holds and clamps the piston rods or comparable round bars by means of springs. And it does so with a high level of reliability: in tests for B10 reliability values, the locking unit safely achieves up to five million cycles in holding operation. Engineers can thus employ the LU6 in safety-related controls up to performance level c, category 1. If additional control measures are integrated in accordance with ISO 13849-1, the locking unit can even be used for controls up to performance level e, category 4. Safety functions like “stopping a dangerous movement” can be safely implemented.
Since the summer of 2015, the LU6 locking unit has also included a safe braking function for pneumatic cylinders in line with ISO 15552. LU6 ensures safe braking, no matter what mounting orientation is chosen. The product also hits the mark with high reliability: it achieves up to two million dynamic braking cycles for the B10 reliability value.
When the LU6 locking unit is combined with an integrated sensor, the availability of machines and systems is increased. The sensor monitors the locking unit opening and closing processes and queries the clamped position. This enables regular testing of the safety function. In addition, sensors can be used for absolute feedback on the piston position, also in accordance with the IP 67 protection class. Thanks to the Aventics solution, users can boost diagnostic coverage to 99 percent.
Aventics offers a comprehensive range of accessories for custom configuration of a wide variety of safety circuits and applications. As of summer 2015, the LU6 also satisfies safe braking requirements for pneumatic cylinders as a well-tried component in accordance with ISO 15552. LU6 locking units come in seven sizes and cover the spectrum of piston rods with diameters measuring from 32 to 125 mm and stroke lengths up to 2,850 mm. The maximum holding force is 12,000 N.
