Silent Efficiency: Tailored Power Solutions for Digital Ward Trolleys in Modern Healthcare

Our success story with JÜKE Systemtechnik GmbH

The digitalisation of healthcare infrastructure is key to enhancing the quality of care in modern hospitals. A central pillar of this transformation is the seamless access to patient data directly at the bedside. To ensure medical staff can work efficiently and safely, mobile systems like the "Ultra-Line" digital ward trolley must be reliable, durable, and, above all, medically compliant. A joint project between JÜKE Systemtechnik, Integrion, and Bicker Elektronik demonstrates how a significant technical hurdle was overcome: the development of a fanless, high-precision power supply for sensitive clinical environments.

The Challenge: Individually Configured, Medically Compliant, and Durable
To achieve maximum hygiene and longevity, the digital ward trolley was designed as a completely fanless system with a service life of over 10 years. To avoid the inefficiencies of adjusting standard components, JÜKE required a power supply with a precise, preconfigured output voltage of 33V DC. The problem? Standard power supplies often require additional filters or active cooling, which would compromise the ultra-compact, silent design.

Furthermore, for safe operation in patient-oriented environments, the system had to meet the strictest requirements:

• Fully fanless operation with verified thermal endurance (electrolytic capacitor life).

• Compliance with international medical safety (2xMOPP) and EMC standards without additional filters.

• Reliable 24/7 continuous operation within a compact, enclosed base unit.

The Solution: Tailor-made PSU for Mobile Medical Units
Bicker Elektronik’s engineers met these requirements with the BEO-3036M-B1, a bespoke version of their high-efficiency AC/DC medical power supply. The core of the system is a compact 3x5" design that delivers a precisely regulated 33V DC output, specifically calibrated for the trolley's charging electronics and Li-ion battery system.

Technical Highlights:

• Fanless High Performance: The unit delivers 250 watts of power without active cooling, achieving an outstanding efficiency of up to 94% to minimise heat dissipation in closed housings.

• Medical Safety (2xMOPP): With a high isolation voltage of 6516 VDC, the PSU provides two independent protection mechanisms (Means Of Patient Protection) to ensure maximum patient safety.

• Superior EMC Compliance: The system meets strict electromagnetic compatibility limit values without the need for additional external filters, simplifying both construction and international certification.

• Validated Longevity: Through intensive thermal analysis and application-specific calculations, Bicker confirmed the long-term reliability of the internal components, supporting the trolley's 10-year service life.

Conclusion and Benefits
This collaboration resulted in a highly reliable and sustainable power solution that supports the mobility and flexibility required by modern clinical staff. By bypassing the need for complex internal modifications, the tailor-made PSU ensures a streamlined and safe medical workstation.

"In Bicker Elektronik we have found a power supply specialist who has become a valuable partner for us both in terms of products and professional development support." — Steffen Hovestadt, JÜKE Systemtechnik GmbH

This project highlights that the success of digital healthcare concepts depends not only on advanced software and displays but also on intelligent, medically certified power solutions that guarantee safety and silence at the point of care.
