Blulog, a startup specialized in securing the cold chain, is working with the Zawonia plantation to set up its monitoring solution on Christmas trees.
Karolina and Filip Gierczak are already the third generation in their family that cultivates Colorado spruces and owns the Zawonia plantation, located on a pittoresque plantation next to the mountain range Trzebnickie Hills in Poland. Each tree requires special attention with 5 to 7 year-care before it goes on sale in Wrocław.
During the sales, many clients have similar questions regarding the trees' production: when were the trees cut down? Where do they come from? How long will it take for them to lose needles? Do they smell like Christmas?
“ Our Christmas trees are cut just before their sale, without intermediaries so that they are fresh and persistent, and can diffuse the smell of the forest throughout the house. In order to preserve at best the tree, it is necessary to place it in a pot and to regularly give it water.
If the tree does not drink water from the pot, it possibly means that it froze and lost the capability of water conductivity" says Karolina, the plantation's owner.
The Blulog NFC data loggers monitor the Christmas trees
To avoid this problem of dehydration and ensure the best quality and freshness of their trees, Karolina and Filip decided to set up a solution to monitor the tree, from harvest to the final owner. Every customer can verify by himself that the quality of his Christmas tree is adequate. Karolina and Filip wanted to prevent situations in which their client's Christmas tree, chosen to decorate the house during this magic, unique time of the year, has a hidden defect, for instance starts losing needles shortly after purchase.
“ Blulog offers a monitoring system composed of a NFC data loggers and a free Google Play app for download. Each customer can access the parameters of time, location and temperature of the selected tree, from the moment of its harvest “ explains Jeremy Laurens Director France and Europe Blulog.
" This is a very innovative, unique and far-reaching technical solution to implement. It ensures the high visual quality of the commercial and household product " says Prof. Karol Wolski, Head of the Department of Grassland and Green Space Management at University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław.
Credit card sized data loggers, attached to trees from a particular production batch, allow to simplify the identification process. Customers can access data by placing their smartphone next to the logger. They can thereby access the information regarding the temperature conditions in which the tree was kept, the time of cutting, as well as the place of origin marked on the Google map with several meters of accuracy. Each one of those parameters has a significant impact on the properties of trees. The customers would know where exactly the tree we would like to buy comes from and if the conditions of storage and transport were adequate.
" I chose this solution, because the implementation of this process takes only one day and the data loggers will measure the data during several seasons, without the necessity of battery replacement. We would like also to adapt the 'Fresh Christmas tree' project in our online sales " - explains Filip Gierczak, the plantation's owner.
Karolina and Filip work hard to make sure that the unique Christmas atmosphere stays in your home as long as possible!
