Bruker supports microplastic analysis around the globe.

Tackling the Microplastic Problem. Together.

Microplastic particles are defined as small plastic particles with a size of less than 5 millimeters. Since this immediately calls for microscopy, Bruker is the natural choice whenever microscopy is combined with chemical analysis by FTIR and/or Raman.

No wonder that in June 2019, in cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), a famous German children's show, displayed our equipment on national public television. The AWI is one of the pioneers exploring the influence of tiny polymer particles on our environment. They managed to explain this really complex topic to children in a very simple and appropriate way.

Shortly thereafter, Bruker was asked by Korean national PayTV to support a program focusing on human health. The Topic? Of course microplastics! Our application scientist was handed some water samples and presented the typical steps of MPP analysis in front of a national audience. The goal was to illustrate the microplastic problems and to make people aware of its imminent danger.

But even before microplastics flared up in the news at the end of 2017, Bruker was already supporting scientists working on microplastic polymer particles (MPP) worldwide. Over the past 5 years, we have acquired outstanding expertise to provide researchers with the appropriate equipment for MPP analysis.
