Damping Time of Ultrasonic Level Transmitters

Damping is the amount of time required, in addition to the update time.

By using high-frequency sound waves to detect the position and distance of objects – Ultrasonic Level Transmitters excel in industrial environments and applications. Ultrasonic level measurement provides continuous, non-contact and maintenance-free level measurement of sewage, wastewater, water conservancy and hydrology. The measurement is unaffected by dielectric constant, density or humidity.

Ultrasonic Level Transmitters are based on the Time-of-Flight principle. A sensor emits ultrasonic pulses, the surface of the media reflects the signal and the sensor detects it again. The Time-of-Flight of the reflected ultrasonic signal is directly proportional to the distance traveled. With the known tank geometry the level can be calculated.

Of critical importance in the performance of a transmitter is a concept called damping. In this way, there is a lag time between the output of the measurement result and the real-time liquid level. As the input variable changes, the transmitter output must update and change accordingly. Damping is the amount of time required, in addition to the update time. Generally, Ultrasonic Level Transmitters can set the data sampling time and average time by selecting the type of measurement conditions, so as to achieve the best match between the damping time and the actual working conditions, and effectively improve the reliability and accuracy of field measurement.

For the liquid level with tumbling fluctuation, the Transmitters measure the average value over a period, and there is a 1 to 2-second time lag between this average value and the actual real-time average value. In this case, it is necessary to analyze the magnitude of the tumbling and fluctuation, and integrate the speed of the up and down fluctuation, as well as to take an evaluation of measurement reliability and feasibility. Furthermore, an experimental trial can be set according to the evaluation and experimental results, and even reset the time, sampling and data analysis methods, to achieve an optimal match of damping time and the working condition, so as to improve the measurement reliability and accuracy.
