Door Automation: How to Choose Your Electric Gate Motor

Spain occupies the lowest positions in criminality in all of Europe. This is assured by the European Statistical Office Eurostat. In the classification of the main types of crimes in 41 countries, Spain is among the last ten states. However, between

Automating the entrance gates to private homes (and companies) is a great solution that brings comfort (since you do not have to open the door manually) and security to buildings (These doors do not have a lock and can only be unlocked from an automated system installed inside the building).

If you want to benefit from these advantages, we recommend that you install an electric gate motor. Before choosing the best engine, we encourage you to discover the different engines out there.

Types of electric gate motors and how they work

There are different motors specially indicated for use in electric gates, as they work in conjunction with speed reducers. These motors are directly connected with gears that allow to reduce the speed and allow the correct operation of the doors. The following are the main ones:

Speed Reducers Worm Gear Corona

These motors are simple to operate. An input shaft, which is an auger, rotates to contact a toothed crown and this, at each turn of the shaft, advances one tooth from the crown.

Linear gear

These motors usually consist of two helical gears placed in such a way that each one of them is related to the previous one. This ratio allows motion to be transmitted faster by a slower motor speed. Thus, each gear reduces the speed of its previous gear.

Planetary gearbox

These motors are composed of a central gear and many gears that revolve around it, known as satellites or planets. The system also contains an internal crown and the entire planetary speed system revolves around it.

Beyond the types of motors, the most common models are 90º gearmotors with brushless motor with encoder.

Which motor is suitable for the different types of electric gate?

These are the most suitable motors for the doors to be fitted:

Sliding doors

Sliding doors operate with worm and wheel reducers. Its design is simple and functional, as they only have as transmission parts a toothed crown in contact with the worm that moves the teeth reducing the transmission speed. The displacement of these reducers is straight, so the transmission can be made in 90 degrees.

The worm and wheel reducer is installed in the upper part of the door and, by means of a system of pulleys and belts, it transmits its movement to get that it has a linear displacement.

Access grids

Access gates are other types of electric gates that use the same system of wormgearboxes for their operation. The reducer is placed in the lower part of the coulters and makes the movement through a pinion in the motor and a toothed rack. In this way, the linear displacement of the door takes place.

Garage door

A sectional garage door is based on a linear reducer, a device designed to convert the rotational motion of a low-voltage DC motor into a linear motor. In this way, this type of electric gate can be lifted, adjusted or tilted at the touch of a button.

One of its great advantages is that it requires less installation space than the following other systems. In this case, it is the linear reducer that closes and opens the swing door.

Access doors to shops and supermarkets

The access doors to shops and supermarkets use for their operation a planetary reducer, whose elements are a central gear that connects with a or carrier and a crown or outer ring thanks to which the central axis of the system can be converted into center of rotation for the ring. In this way, it is possible to change the direction easily.

The planetary reducer that is placed in the access doors to shops and supermarkets is hidden inside the fixing tube to the floor and therefore creates a very aesthetic effect. In these gates, it is the movement of the gearmotor that causes the movement of the door.

Hinged doors

In hinged doors there are several types such as: linear systems (large arm systems for garage doors) that usually also operate by means of a 90º motor reducer and have a maximum opening between 90º and 120º, debrazo systems (for pedestrian doors) and underground systems.

Linear motors

A linear motor is the most common in electric gates. Different methods are used to operate the arm. It is very popular because it has an affordable price and the installation is simple.

Motors with articulated arm

These types of motors use an articulated arm to reach the pillar and open the door. This arm can be used on doors up to 4000 mm in length of each leaf. It is versatile and provides automation for most types of swing doors, even those pre-installed without a motor.

Underground engines

These types of engines are very discreet. They are installed under the floor inside a protective box, with the drive arm connected to the bottom of the door. The main drawback is that it requires a more complex installation. It can be used in doors with leaves that reach 3,500 mm in length.

Factors to consider before choosing an electric gate motor

The choice of gearmotor will depend on the length and weight of the door, the type of door and the type of door and whether the door is outside or inside:

Food: It is very important that you pay attention to the type of power of the motor and the volts and watts it supports, among others. It is also important that you pay attention to the type of current (alternating or direct) of the place where the installation is going to be done.

Installation space: The place where the installation is going to take place is important not only to know the type of current but also to know if it is exterior or interior. Depending on this variant, one motor or another will have to be chosen.

Power: Power is also very important in such an engine. Depending on the weight of the door, you will need a motor of one power or another.

How to find the right engine?

When choosing the motor for the automation of a hinged door, the type, length and weight of the hinged door must be taken into account, as well as whether the door is indoors or outdoors.

The performance of the motor depends on the dimensions and weight of the door and also on whether the door is located inside a building or outside.
