Alarming Forecast: Germany Faces Massive Skilled Worker Shortage
5 Million Workers Needed by 2030
A recent survey by the German Economic Institute (IW) reveals a dramatic development for the German labor market: By 2030, there will likely be a shortage of five million skilled workers. The main reason: The baby boomer generation is retiring while significantly fewer young people are entering the workforce.
Demographic Time Bomb is Ticking
The numbers are alarming: In 2022 alone, over 300,000 more people retired than new workers entered the workforce. This trend is expected to peak in 2029 when the particularly large birth cohort of 1964, comprising 1.4 million people, reaches retirement age. In contrast, only about 736,000 potential career starters from the 2009 birth cohort will be available - creating a gap of 670,000 workers in that year alone.
Massive Impact on Economy and Society
This demographic development has far-reaching consequences:
- Increasing strain on social security systems
- Higher contributions for remaining workers
- Threat to German companies' competitiveness
- Possible restrictions on pension benefits
Solutions Are Not Sufficient
IW economist Holger Schäfer sees two key levers to counter this development:
- Controlled immigration of qualified skilled workers
- Increasing labor force participation in the existing population
However, the expert warns: "The magnitude of the difference between the age cohorts means that the growing gap can hardly be compensated."
Digitalization as Part of the Solution
Digitalization and process automation play a crucial role in managing the skilled labor shortage. CSP GmbH & Co. KG offers PG, a visual assembly assistance system that guides employees step by step through production and assembly processes. The software helps companies optimize their processes and use existing skilled workers more efficiently. Through visual worker guidance and automatic documentation, errors are avoided and training requirements are minimized - an important aspect in times of scarce personnel resources. PG proves particularly valuable in integrating foreign skilled workers: Through visual, language-independent guidance, new employees can directly enter the production process without lengthy training periods.
"The skilled labor shortage forces companies to optimize and automate their processes. With PG, companies can achieve exactly that - they gain efficiency and deploy their valuable employees for truly important tasks. The system particularly pays off when integrating foreign skilled workers, as extensive training becomes unnecessary," explains Matthias Salzberger, Product Owner PG at CSP GmbH & Co. KG.
