Cloud Exit Strategy: Why Companies Are Now Considering Alternatives to the Public Cloud

Over the past few years, many companies have moved their IT infrastructure to the cloud—either entirely or in a modular fashion. The advantages are clear: easy scalability, low maintenance overhead, and high availability. However, dependency on individual cloud providers also brings risks. As a result, more and more companies are developing a Cloud Exit Strategy to be able to respond confidently and in a controlled manner if needed.
A Cloud Exit Strategy refers to the structured preparation for withdrawing from cloud services—whether switching to another provider or returning to on-premises infrastructure. The reasons for this are varied: changing data protection regulations, service restrictions, contract terminations, or economic risks on the provider’s side.
A structured exit typically involves five steps:
- Planning & Analysis – Formation of an exit team, documentation of all cloud services in use
- Risk Analysis – Evaluation of potential triggers such as political, legal, or economic changes
-Scenario Development – Designing specific migration strategies (e.g., switching to a new provider or returning to on-premises systems)
- Migration Planning – Defining technical, organizational, and legal measures- ETesting & Validation – Simulating exit processes in a secure test environment
The goal is to avoid operational disruptions, data loss, and legal uncertainty in the event of an exit. A cloud exit strategy also strengthens a company’s negotiating position with cloud providers and simplifies provider changes or hybrid setups.
Exiting is especially challenging for quality-relevant or audit-required data. Companies should therefore analyze early on which data needs to be secured independently of cloud structures in the long term—for example, to comply with product liability, compliance, or archiving requirements.
A suitable solution for tamper-proof, GDPR-compliant archiving of such data is offered by CSP with its CHRONOS software.
