Cubic Methane Leak Sensing Solution for Oil and Gas Industry Compliance with EU Methane Regulation
How to Implement Effective Methane Leak Sensing Solution in the Oil and Gas Industry to Meet EU Methane Regulation?
On 15 November 2023, the European Union reached the provisional agreement on a new EU Methane Regulation, as part of the proposals to deliver European Green Deal, aimed at reducing methane emissions in the energy sectors of Europe. The oil and gas industry will be subject to the highest monitoring standards, requiring accurate measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification of methane emissions, along with proactive measures to reduce emissions (EU, 2023).
The purpose of the new methane regulatory agreement is to minimize methane leaks from oil and gas companies operating within the European Union to the greatest extent possible. It requires “operators to report regularly to the competent authorities about quantification and measurements of methane emissions at source level, including for non-operated assets”, and it obliges “oil and gas companies to carry out regular surveys of their equipment to detect and repair methane leaks on the EU territory within specific deadlines” (EU,2023).
To meet the restrictive requirements of the new regulatory agreement, adopting accurate methane detection equipment can assist operators promptly detect methane leaks enabling them to take necessary measures.
Cubic, a leading manufacturer of gas sensors and gas analyzers, has leveraged a mature technology platform of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) and has innovatively developed a superior and reliable methane gas sensor, Gasboard-2502, which could be applied for methane leaks detection in oil and gas industry.
On the basis of the TDLAS principle, Cubic methane gas sensor, Gaboard-2502, has been specially designed with a long optical path for multiple light reflections, which enables the sensor to achieve ultra-low detection limit and high resolution in the low concentration range. Aiming at low-concentration methane leakage in the atmospheric background, Gasboard-2502 can achieve highly selective and accurate methane leakage detection, with a minimum detection limit of 1ppm and a resolution of 0.1ppm. Furthermore, it boasts fast response times with a warm-up time of less than 10 seconds. Considering adaptation to outdoor harsh working conditions and complex environments, Gasboard-2502 also has superior advantages due to implementation of TDLAS technology for anti-humidity, and embedded temperature compensation algorithm and self-diagnosis function for environmental compatibility. With the compact modular structure, Gasboard-2502 has been gradually integrated into more and more fixed detectors in oil and gas industry for methane emission monitoring.
