Cubic Innovative TDLAS Methane Detection Sensors Enable Emissions Monitoring in the Energy Sector

How Can Cubic Innovative Methane Detection Technologies Help the Oil and Gas Industry Address the Problem of Methane Leaks?

According to the Global Methane Tracker report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2024, methane emissions from the energy sector remained near a record high in 2023. The data in the report shows that methane emissions from the energy sector reached nearly 130 million tonnes (Mt) in 2023. From 2022 to 2023, methane emissions from the oil industry grew by 2% to reach 49 Mt, while methane emissions from the natural gas industry grew by 4% to reach 29 Mt. In 2023, the number of large-scale methane emission events detected by satellites increased by more than 50% compared to 2022. Additionally, more than 5 Mt of methane emissions were detected from major methane leaks around the world.

While the oil and gas industry has made high-level commitments to reduce methane emissions by nearly 55% by 2030, the detailed methane policies and regulations currently planned or in place are expected to cut emissions from oil and gas operations by around 20% by 2030 (IEA, 2024). This discrepancy highlights the urgent need for more effective methane mitigation measures across the energy industry to meet the targeted emissions reduction goals.

To achieve the commitments for reducing global methane emissions, the adoption of accurate methane detection equipment can assist operators promptly detect methane leaks, enabling them to take necessary measures.

Cubic, a leading manufacturer of gas sensors and gas analyzers, has leveraged a mature technology platform of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) and has innovatively developed a superior and reliable methane gas sensor, Gasboard-2502, which could be applied for methane leaks detection in oil and gas industry.

On the basis of the TDLAS principle, Cubic methane gas sensor, Gaboard-2502, has been specially designed with a long optical path for multiple light reflections, which enables the sensor to achieve ultra-low detection limit and high resolution in the low concentration range. Aiming at low-concentration methane leakage in the atmospheric background, Gasboard-2502 can achieve highly selective and accurate methane leakage detection, with a minimum detection limit of 1ppm and a resolution of 0.1ppm. Furthermore, it boasts fast response times with a warm-up time of less than 10 seconds. Considering adaptation to outdoor harsh working conditions and complex environments, Gasboard-2502 also has superior advantages due to implementation of TDLAS technology for anti-humidity, and embedded temperature compensation algorithm and self-diagnosis function for environmental compatibility. With the compact modular structure, Gasboard-2502 has been gradually integrated into more and more fixed detectors in oil and gas industry for methane emission monitoring.

As countries and companies strengthen their methane policies and commitments, the widespread adoption of methane detection solutions will be essential to transfer high-level goals into tangible emission reduction measures on the ground. By enabling rapid identification of methane leaks, the Gasboard-2502 plays a crucial role in helping improve the reliability and credibility of methane emissions data in the oil and gas industry.
