Lashing straps from Dortmund family business secure wrapping of Arc de Triomphe

Inside Arc de Triomphe. Wrapped

Dortmund/Paris. The most exciting work of art at the moment is probably being created in Paris. It is the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe, long planned and prepared down to the smallest detail by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Now the action is being realized posthumously. The family-owned company Dolezych in Dortmund is involved.

Goethe's Faust already asked himself what holds the world together at its core. The answer to this question is left to philosophers. But what holds the 25,000 square meters of fabric together at the heart of the spectacular wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris became quite clear on Saturday, September 11, 2021: It turned out to be the 2,616 silver and orange lashing straps made by Dolezych from Dortmund, which made their way to Paris and helped to make this wrapping dream come true.

Your straps saved my ass!

A lashing strap is needed after every 50 cm. Silver-grey lashing straps hold the fabric tarpaulins to poles, secure the framework and connect the fabric to the framework. Orange lashing straps, 100 mm wide, are responsible for securing on the triumphal arch.

Vladimir Yavachev, Christo's nephew, is project director of the operation. He expressly thanks Sven Wasik, head of Dolezych business development, who traveled to Paris to see what was happening: "Your straps saved my ass!"

Lashing straps are everywhere - securing and holding together, they are among the main players on this day when the shrouding begins. In widths between 25 mm and 100 mm, Dolezych supplied straps in special colors - in line with the project manager's request during preparation: "Tell Dolezych, bring more straps".

Do it yourself

In addition to the lashing straps, the Dortmund-based specialist for safe lifting and transporting also supplies the expertise at the same time: On site, Sven Wasik demonstrates at dizzy heights how the belts are correctly tensioned and tightens some lashing belts himself. In that way, he is part of the large project family.

The German engineer Jörg Tritthardt, responsible for all calculations and the execution of the entire art project, asks if everyone is happy. Sven Wasik is definitely. Especially because the lashing straps, which are otherwise used commercially, are in this case part of a spectacular work of art. Finally, on the construction site, it's all about what art offers in the best case: Pure enjoyment. Asked what's left to do now, the civil engineer replies, "Just enjoy!"

Dolezych is eager to see more projects. The managing director of the "Wrapped Reichstag" project (Berlin 1995, lashing straps from Dolezych were also involved here), Wolfgang Volz, is certainly planning further actions. It is to be hoped that Dolezych lashing straps will be involved again in future art actions.
