Fertiliser Helps Grower Claim Record Wheat Yield

A Peterborough-based fertiliser tank supplier is reinforcing the importance of storing large volumes of fertiliser correctly in order to benefit from bulk-buying savings and to reduce wastage. As a Northumberland grower attributes his claimed world record wheat yield to fertiliser.

Northumberland farmer, Rod Smith, claims to have achieved a world record wheat yield of 16.52t/ha and attributes his achievement to his usage of fertiliser. The winning technique combined 310kg/ha of nitrogen, based on a target crop yield of 17t/ha, soil testing and previous cropping. The crop also received four fungicide and growth regulator sprays.

Often considered as one of agricultures greatest consumable expenses, fertiliser is a commodity that is subject to large price fluctuations and its correct management and application is imperative in relation to crop yields and therefore, returns on its investment.

Funded by the Environment Agency, the WATERR project has recently presented research findings indicating that growers throughout Kent are increasing their trickle irrigation water usage and that substrate grown crops, which use efficient trickle irrigation techniques, topped the average water use by crops in the three project years or 2011, 2012 and 2013. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Produced by the UK’s Arable Sector Significantly Lower Than Previously Thought!

Nitrous oxide is an important greenhouse gas, contributing more than 40% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions. Previously, production levels of nitrous oxide from soil were calculated at 1% a unit of nitrogen (N) applied. However, Farmers Weekly report that the five-year average Minimising Nitrous Oxide (MIN-NO) research study estimate for UK arable land is 0.46% of N applied, taking into account UK soil and climatic conditions. Following intensive three-year field-based experiments across arable areas in England and Scotland and using industry data from commercial farms, researchers used models to estimate a national picture of emissions due to major UK arable crops and their products.
