Evolution of Data Center Cooling Technologies
From Fan Walls to Dielectric Baths: The Four-Stage Evolution of Data Center Cooling
Data center cooling has evolved across four major solutions. Traditional air cooling, driven by fan walls, suffers low energy efficiency, driving liquid cooling adoption. Rear door heat exchangers install coils at rack rears—coolant absorbs exhaust heat, transferring it via CDU to cooling towers while servers keep original air structures. Cold plate cooling replaces heat sinks with custom plates, circulating liquid to external CDUs. Immersion cooling achieves direct-contact heat extraction across sealed enclosure, open bath and hybrid types in single or two-phase forms, governed by OCP Immersion Requirement 2.0 and ASHRAE classifications, integrating TCS and FWS loops. EXTRCOOL provides one-stop full liquid cooling solutions.
