100kW CRAC to 600kW Fan Walls to Rack-Level RDHx: The Four-Stage Cooling Technology Map

Data center cooling has evolved from CRAC units running independent refrigerant loops at up to 100kW capacity, to centralized CRAH systems connected to building chilled water, and increasingly to modular fan walls delivering 500-600kW per unit for 5-10MW hall-level cooling without raised floors. The emerging rack-level RDHx solution installs on server rack rears, supporting 30-40kW passively and over 50kW with active fans, as deployed at xAI's Memphis data center, with heat exchange efficiency up to 0.8 versus 0.6-0.7 for CRAH and fan walls, enabling higher chilled water inlet temperatures.
