The CDU, the Most Expensive and Most Misunderstood Part of Liquid Cooling

30-40% of Cost, 40-60% Gross Margin, Approach Within 1°C: The Three Functions and Three Rules Buyers Keep Misreading

The most expensive part is the CDU, accounting for 30% to 40% of system cost. Three functions define it: heat exchange, flow drive and pressure stabilization, and a well-built unit holds approach temperature within 1°C, carrying 15% to 20% more heat. One operator saw pump impeller cavitation six months after delivery because saturation vapor pressure was ignored. Selection follows three rules: approach at or below 1°C, pump NPSH at 1.5 times margin, and control response under 3 seconds. ASHRAE's 2025 Standard 127 Supplement b set the first unified CDU test method. EXTRCOOL provides one-stop liquid cooling solutions.
