Liquid Cooling Fundamentals, Cold Plate, Immersion and Spray Explained
90% Cold Plate, PUE 1.05 Immersion, 40-80kW Spray: Reading the Three Liquid Cooling Families by Density, Principle and Boundary
Cold plate, immersion and spray are the three liquid cooling families: liquid cooling never means water touching electronics, only immersion submerges the server in dielectric fluid. Cold plate holds about 90 percent of the market with a metal plate bonded to the chip and coolant driven by the CDU pump through a closed two-loop system, suiting 30 to 100 kilowatts per rack at PUE 1.12 to 1.18, while immersion submerges the whole server for 100 to 250 kilowatts at PUE near 1.05 and spray cools 40 to 80 kilowatts with nozzle risk. Density selection assigns air below 20 kilowatts, cold plate at 30 to 100 and immersion above 100. EXTRCOOL provides one-stop liquid cooling solutions.
