The Chiller, the Primary-Side Heart of AI Data Center Liquid Cooling
19% of Failures, 40% of Energy and PUE Limits Tightening: Why the 600kW Rack Generation Turns the Chiller Into a Compliance Asset
AI data centers are revaluing the primary-side chiller as liquid cooling becomes mandatory: NVIDIA rack power moves from about 120 to 140 kilowatts in the GB200 generation toward 600 kilowatts and beyond, and the chiller takes the CDU's return water through a refrigeration cycle in a closed loop, mattering because cooling faults caused 19 percent of major data center failures in 2024, refrigeration takes about 40 percent of data center energy and PUE limits keep tightening. The magnetic-bearing centrifugal compressor cuts power and operating cost about 30 percent against screw units, and the compressor accounts for more than half of chiller cost. EXTRCOOL provides one-stop liquid cooling solutions.
