Gas cylinders assembled with ATEX certified air motors

For explosive environments

In this article we will analyse an interesting application in explosive environments, specifically in the oil & gas sector. The cylinder filling operations, made with methane or LPG fuels, are important and sensitive. They must comply with high standards to avoid fire risks caused by the level of flammability and fire hazard.

In this case the customer is a manufacturer of production and filling systems for gas cylinders. He was aiming to automate the tightening operation of the pressure reducer, located in the upper part of the gas cylinder. Fiam supplied an Atex Certified Air Motor to be installed on a robot which handles the tightening process. The pneumatic motor is the most suitable choice for this application. An electric one would heat up, increasing the risk factors linked to the explosive environment. Furthermore, the ATEX certification required for such environment is way less expensive on pneumatic motor when compared to the electric technology.

3 good reasons to choose Atex certified air motor for this application:

1. In this field, the Atex certification is mandatory and is therefore the main parameter to be considered. Fiam air motors, with Atex certification, meet the following classifications: the 2014/34 / EU directive, Ex II 2G Ex h IIC T5 Gb and Ex II 2D Ex h IIIC T5 Db.

2. The tightening of the cylinder pressure reducer is ensured by the stall torque of the motor: a simple system that ensures consistency of performance over time, without the use of additional control systems.

The pneumatic motor advantage is twofold: 1) safe use of the stall torque without any risk for the motor, 2) an easy adjustment by acting directly on the pressure regulator of the pneumatic system.

3. Fiam oil free technology allows the use of these motors without lubricated air, ensuring the elimination of oil mist emissions into the environment. The motor is made entirely of stainless steel, it resists to the direct contact of gases coming from cylinder and avoids corrosion over time.

Fiam offers a wide range of Atex Certified air motors. You can choose among our standard solutions, but you also have the possibility to ask for a customized solution. Tailored on your needs, our customized solution is suitable for every environment.
