Air Motors for actuator rotary motion in capping operation

Packaging

Among various air motors applications, one of its, is Capping operation.

Machine that tightens or secures a container's cap. Every company that fills products into bottles, containers, or jars needs a way to close the container, and the most common closure is a cap.

Here the air drive unit make the difference in the closure.

Along these lines, thanks to a metering system, a container with different physical characteristics will be filled with a fluid. From beverage bottles in Food Processing, to containers for cosmetic creams, to bottles for detergents to canisters for cleaning agents, air motors prove to be valuable allies.

What are the main values for this type of application?

• ENSURE CORRECT and safe CLOSURE

Due to the special aptitude of the air motor to reach the stall torque, or the "stop" torque, which stops the rotation of the motor, there is certainty that the cap will be closed at the predetermined torque necessary for proper closure, without risk of product leakage and unwanted spillage.

• SAFETY FOR FLAMMABLE PRODUCTS

Air motors work by enduring repeated starts and stops and, if brought to a stall, never generate any overheating, avoiding any risk of short circuit.

This becomes important especially in presence of flammable and/or corrosive elements (ex: bleach, acetone, lubricating oils etc...).

Then in the case of the closure of LPG cylinders, for example, it is also mandatory for the engines to be ATEX Certified, given the high risk of flammability. In this case, alternative solutions to the pneumatic, electric motors, are to be absolutely ruled out, given the high safety hazard they entail.

• TIGHTENING SUITABLE FOR HOT STAMPING

Among the examples of Packaging mentioned, many of these can be structured in plastic, a material with special characteristics where air solutions can prove particularly useful.

The thread that characterizes plastic containers is in fact "hot stamped."

This causes the thread surface to have many irregularities, typical of hot stamping.

The tightening operation, especially at the first tightening, will therefore have to be done by overcoming a certain friction force, generated precisely by these irregularities of stamping.

If using the electric motor will result in an early stop, due to perceived torque overshoot and/or possible error feedback, with the air motor the tightening will be guaranteed to perfection. In fact, in this case the motor will stop only when the stall torque is correctly reached and NOT before, overcoming irregularities and performing the capping phase correctly.

• ATEX CERTIFICATION AND IP67 PROTECTION

As previously mentioned, the motors can be ATEX certified, in accordance with the European Union Directive 2014/34/EU, being able to be used in potentially explosive and particularly hazardous environments.

Not only that! The motors can also be fitted with certified IP67 Protection: an important condition that makes them usable in wet and dusty environment and even can be immerged in about 1 meter deep.

Fiam's air motors are therefore adaptable according your capping operation requirements, even in production sectors where higher levels of safety may be required, related to the materials processed in the production chain.

With a standard large range in the catalog, Fiam also offers customized solutions.
