Revving Up Air Quality Improvement:FPI’s Mobile Monitoring Vehicle Takes Center Stage in China’s VOCs Governance

Pollution prevention and control has long been a priority in China's air quality management. At the National Ecological and Environmental Protection Work Conference held on February 16-17, "The Blue Sky Defense Action" was highlighted as a key task for this year, with particular emphasis on "carrying out in-depth VOCs governance." This effort represents a significant focus of this year's air quality improvement initiatives.

What is VOCs ?

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and NOx are important precursors of ozone generation. They are released from a variety of sources, including vehicle exhaust, paint and other coatings, solvents, consumer products and many manufacturing process. Accurately monitoring and tracking them is critical to effective prediction and monitoring of ozone pollution.

How to monitor VOCs?

In this project, the Central Environmental Monitoring Station has deployed a "VOCs + AQI six-sensor" mobile monitoring vehicle as a "secret weapon" for monitoring and investigating VOCs pollution sources in wood processing industrial clusters around Beijing.

It is equipped with a second-level response VOCs dual-channel navigation monitoring system (including fully automatic gas chromatography mass spectrometer, proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer) and six parameters of the national standard method (NOx, SO2, CO, O3, PM2. 5. PM10) monitoring system.

Through roving synchronous monitoring, using "navigation + fixed point, surface measurement + point measurement, imaging + data, path + positioning", to conduct a comprehensive screening of VOCs concentration changes in the region, and "precise imaging" to generate a "thermal map" of pollution values, Quickly grasp the distribution and concentration range of VOCs in the region, accurately identify pollution sources, dynamically monitor changes in pollution factors, and provide fast and accurate data support for delineating suspicious hidden pollution emission sources.

It is worth mentioning that the proton transfer time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF) carried in the car is one of the most cutting-edge navigation monitoring technologies. It is completely independently developed by FPI and is currently leading in the field of real-time navigation monitoring of high-end mass spectrometry in China.

In addition, this is not the first time that this FPI self-developed navigation monitoring vehicle has appeared in the media.As early as 2020, it was listed on the front page of "China Environment News" as a "star product".

· Multiple applications

The mobile monitoring vehicle enables high-precision and rapid detection of air quality parameters, including VOCs, and expands monitoring capabilities to include odor factors such as H2S/NH3, organic sulfur, and organic amine. This allows for real-time online monitoring of pollution sources, enterprise boundary points, and urban environmental sensitive areas, and facilitates rapid screening of pollutant components from various angles, achieving ambient air quality assessment and pollution traceability.

In addition to routine navigation, inspection patrol navigation, and joint law enforcement navigation, the mobile monitoring vehicle can be used for emergency monitoring of sudden environmental pollution accidents, investigating volatile organic compound pollution components in ambient air, and real-time monitoring of VOC concentration levels and changes in ambient air quality.
