FPI SUPEC-7000 ICP-MS Organic Sample Analysis

The Element Analyzsis in Crude Oil By SUPEC-7000 ICP-MS

In petrochemical processes, trace and ultra-trace elements in petroleum products play vital roles. For instance, the presence of elements such as Na, Mg, Fe, Ca, and Va in crude oil can poison catalyst activity. Elements like Ni, V and Pb can serve as fingerprint information for crude oil, providing crucial references for understanding crude oil formation and tracing the oil spills. Therefore, the determination of trace elements in crude oil products holds significant importance.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), as an analysis technology with extremely high resolution and multi-element analysis capability, can meet various elements determination in crude oil, addressing the need for rapid and stable analysis.

In this application, the organic sample introduction method is employed to determine multiple elements. After diluting the crude oil, direct measurement using ICP-MS is conducted. This sample introduction method not only avoids cumbersome pre-processing procedures and the introduction of contamination but also enables the simultaneous determination of multiple elements, achieving a quick, efficient, and accurate measurement.

About the test intrument(SUPEC-7000 ICP-MS), you'd like to know more in images attached.

Sample Pre-treatment

Aviation kerosene CONOSTAN PremiSolv ICP diluent; oil standard: CONOSTAN S-21

After uniform sampling, the crude oil samples were heated in a water bath at 50~60 ℃ to a flowing state. After weighing the heated crude oil samples, the internal standard element Y (1 ppm) was added and diluted with aviation kerosene CONOSTAN PremiSolv.

For samples with large viscosity, if it is not possible to mix the sample with aviation kerosene, it is necessary to heat the sample until the sample and aviation kerosene are evenly mixed.

Results

Samples A and B were measured and spiked with different levels of recovery experiments for both samples to verify the method accuracy, the results of the determination and the recovery results are shown in Table 2. The recoveries of all the elements were in the range of 85% to 120%, which indicates that the method has good accuracy.

About the detail, you'd like to know more in images attached.

Internal standard stability

In the long-term test about 2.5 h, the recoveries of internal standard Y were normalized, and they were always kept between 0.89 and 1.1, which proved that the instrument has good stability of the internal standard.(More information, pls check the images attached)

Conclusion

This experiment shows that the ICP-MS organic injection system can be used to accurately determine a variety of elements such as B, Na, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, etc. in crude oil samples, and the collision mode is utilized to remove the interference from the organic matter. With the detection limits of each element in the range of 0.0093-0.614 ng/g, the recoveries of sample spiked with standards ranging from 85% to 120%, and the recoveries of the internal standard remaining stable within 2.5h hours.
