GGR''S unic spider crane gives designer a lift at Selfridges London

The statue forms part of “The World of Rick Owens” which celebrates his 20 years in the fashion industry and is Selfridges'' biggest ever single designer project. The figure made from steel coated in polystyrene took 12 weeks to create and was installed in one evening by GGR''s UNIC mini crane in time for the launch of the new concept Selfridges store.

A 6 tonne capacity UNIC URW-706 mini spider crane was hired to install the impressive sculpture in three sections - the 1000kg torso, the 175kg head complete with black coated fabric strips for hair and the 500kg arm which carries a flaming torch. This challenging lift required precision and efficiency which GGR''s mini crane and skilled operators were able to provide on this overnight contract lift job.

The UNIC URW-706 mini crane worked from the pavement outside Selfridges'' entrance to lift the sculpture into position on top of the 6 metre high canopy. Lifting to a maximum height of 14 metres, the mini crane lifted each section from the transport vehicle using slings that were attached to secure lifting points built into the sculpture.

GGR''s UNIC mini spider cranes are proven performers when it comes to safely installing artwork and sculptures in hard to reach areas. A UNIC URW-376 mini crane was hired to install the statue of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama on the same canopy at this Selfridges store in 2012 as part of the Kusama collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
